Gabbs Valley Range WSA

We went out to the Gabbs Valley Range WSA (79,600 arces) on Saturday. The Gabbs Valley Range (GVR) is located about 30 miles or so east of Hawthorne in Mineral County. The GVR seems remote and has a real wild quality about it …not the place to break an ankle. It was a very blustery day with the winds gusting in excess of 30 mph. It felt like midwinter as we hiked up Red Rock Canyon to check out the Narrows, which looked like an interesting place on the map. We made it up the wash in no time and found water in Red Rock Spring and it was actually flowing. The Narrows were pretty cool and opened up into a big valley that begged to be explored. Because of the wind we ate a quick lunch on the fly back to the truck, and then decided to take the long way home to though Gabbs so we could grab a burger at Middlegate Station.
The Gabbs Valley Range is worthy of wilderness designation and a place I know we will continue to explore.
