Good News & Bad News...

Well I'm sure a few of you have wondered where the heck I've been...well Las Vegas that's where.

In between my two Sheldon trips I was laid-off from my job of 13 years. I didn't think I should cry about it on my blog because the blog isn't really about my life, it is about Wild Nevada & folks I love (like Henry). The good news is I found another job with my favorite non-profit group Friends of Nevada Wilderness, as the Southern Nevada Wilderness Program Director ...YEA! I get to work full time for the next 18 months on keeping Nevada Wild...that's a good thing. I will start in LV full time sometime next week. I'm going to miss northern Nevada , but just think of all the great photos from southern Nevada that will start gracing this blog... YEA.

I will be working in the Mt Charleston Area (but exploring all of southern Nevada)as a consultant for the US Forest Service as per a special agreement...Good Stuff

BTW- I couldn't resist the showgirls ;-) Besides, it's always more fun to laugh.

Sunny said...: Tough break about your old job. I think it really WILL be really good stuff in Las Vegas though. Because, guess where I just got back from. Las Vegas! (We've got to quit almost meeting like this). My siblings and I went to Red Rock and really loved it in spite of 108 degrees out. Plenty of lovely wild Nevada down there. I look forward to seeing it on the blog. And, I like your upbeat attitude. It sounds like a great job where you can really make a difference. You'll do great. really great stuff. True, I'd miss Northern Nevada too, but, maybe you can get up this way sometimtes to visit Allison.; 8/01/2009 8:55 AM

Nevada Hiker said...: I feel good about the career change; it’s good to doing something different (after the same old same old for 30+ years). I feel very fortunate to find a job in just a month ( a trip to the Sheldon too). I know a few people that have been out of work since the first of the year. One of the best parts about my new job is the positive atmosphere. The construction business was such doom & gloom and it was full of all the bad stuff associated with that kind of environment.

As far a Las Vegas goes, it’s cool, although a bit over crowded. I lived in LA/Orange County for years so I’m unenthusiastically used to it. I’m living in the northwest part of LV in a very cool home called Mud Ranch (you’ll see photos soon) with some nice folks who have generously take me in and treat me like family. I live fairly close to work and I don’t have to get on a freeway to get there. I’m very close the mountains too. I look forward to doing some hiking/backpacking in what some consider the best hiking in the state, and I get to do what I feel called to do…help keep Nevada Wild….Good Stuff.

BTW- I have a new laptop courtesy of my new employer, but no photo editing software yet so it might be a while a little while before I posted some pics.; 8/05/2009 6:18 AM

The Geography of Hope

Something will have gone out of us as a people if we ever let the remaining wilderness be destroyed; if we permit the last virgin forests to be turned into comic books and plastic cigarette cases; if we drive the few remaining members of the wild species into zoos or to extinction; if we pollute the last clean air and dirty the last clean streams and push our paved roads through the last of the silence, so that never again will Americans be free from noise, the exhausts, the stinks of human and automotive waste. And so that never again can we have the chance to see ourselves single, separate, vertical and individual in the world, part of the environment of trees and rocks and soil, brother to the other animals, part of the natural world and competent to belong in it.We simply need that wild country available to us, even if we never do more than drive to its edge and look in. For it can be a means of reassuring ourselves of our sanity as creatures, a part of the geography of hope.

A call to duty

I love to hike and wander through the Nevada Desert, to experience its ever-changing weather, and to face the Nevada Outback on its terms. It would be my hope that you would go out, get dusty, and explore Wild Nevada and experience the rugged wildness of the landscape for yourself. Before long you will thirst for the solitude of its 100 miles vistas and for a view of the sky that is so big it is beyond comprehension. You will find real solace in a small grove of quakies fluttering in a cool summer breeze high in a mountain canyon miles from nowhere. Perhaps in time you will sense the “Call of the Wild” in your heart fall and in love with the land, soon after that you will come to the realization that you have a responsibility to preserve and protect her. For Nevada has her friends who love her, but she also has those who are out to rape and plunder her for profit who care not for the land or the future , but only for their own riches. In the shortsighted cry for public access which is in reality the cry for machines to go anywhere and everywhere, they are unwittingly lobbying for her destruction. There are those who come in the name of recreation who are so caught up in the thrill of the moment that they ride rough shod over the landscape destroying in a day what it took nature an eternity to create. Therefore, it is up to the all folks who love Nevada to step up to the plate , get organized and make a stand. I ask you if you love Nevada and you know that keeping it it Wild is the right thing to do, then join us in the fight.
